Description

  1. Pick an assistant, and explain the gimmick to that person quietly. The assistant leaves the classroom.
  2. The class will then choose an object in the classroom.
  3. The assistant then comes back into the classroom.
  4. The teacher asks questions to the student. For example, Is it the box? No. Is it James's chair? No. Is it the black pen? No. Is it Sandra's bag? Yes. The gimmick: The assistant answers yes to the question following the black question.
  5. Play the game again, and see if the students figure out the gimmick. If not, tell them.
  6. Divide the class into small groups and say that each group must decide on its own trick. The trick in each case must be based on words. For example:
    • Do you think it's this box? (Advanced grammar)
    • Is it this pen? (Demonstrative)
    • I know, how about this pen? (Lead-in phrase)
    • Is it this big book? (Adjective)
    • Is it Kenji's book? (Possessive)
  7. Each group should then try out their trick in the class and see if the others can discover the secret verbal signal.
