Cultural boards

From Akita Wiki

Make a poster board with cultural information on it. Ask your JTE or principal for space.

Things to try

  • Use simple English.
  • A little Japanese is fine.
  • Pictures are great.
  • Make a new board every month.
  • If you give students a chance to write something on it, they will.
  • Hang out by your board a little. Talk to students about the topic when they walk by.
  • Pick topics that you and students enjoy.

Topics

  • Anime and cosplay in your home country. What shows from Japan are on TV? Are the names of the shows different? Historically, what shows made the biggest impact? Does your home country have its own anime? What's your favorite anime? Or manga.
  • Gaijin sumo. Who won? Were there Japanese people competing? What about the charity?
  • Japanese movies. Maybe you like old Japanese movies. Students probably don't know much about old Japanese movies. Who is Toshiro Mifune? Kurosawa?
  • About you. Your students probably forgot your self-introduction, so do it again. Include more details.
  • Christmas. Or any holiday.
  • Your vacation to Thailand. If you go anywhere, make a board about it when you come back.
  • Under construction. If your board is old, put this up while you make a new one.
  • Summer vacation. Leave a pencil near your board and tell students they can write about or draw a picture of what they did during summer vacation.
