One day on a hill in Italy a little boy was drawing a picture on a large stone.
A man came along on horseback. He looked at the picture on the stone for some time. He got off the horse. "You don't know me, do you?" he said to the boy. "I'm Cimabue, the painter. I'll teach you how to paint."
The boy went to the city of Florence with Cimabue, and there he studied how to paint.

The boy's name was Giotto. He was born near Florence about 1266. He was the son of a peasant. When he was a little boy, he watched the sheep to help his father. He was so fond of drawing that every day he drew pictures on stones.
As soon as he became a pupil of Cimabue, he began to work hard, and learned a lot.
Later he himself became a great painter whose works covered the walls of many famous churches in Italy.

When Giotto became famous, some men came to see him.
"May we see some of your paintings?" they said. "We're looking for someone to paint on the walls of our church. He must be the best painter in the country."
Giotto drew a circle on a piece of white paper. Though he did not use any tools, it was a perfect circle.
"You can draw something else, can't you?" said the men. "If this is the best you can do, we don't think you'll be chosen."
But Giotto was chosen. The judge said, "Anyone who can draw such a perfect circle must be a great painter."
