Lesson goals: Match capital letters and their pronunciation. Get used to the phrases "What do you want?" and "~, please."
Preparation: Picture cards (capital letters), digital media, (reflection cards), picture cards from the back of the book (capital letters p. 47, 49. It's a good idea to have them cut ahead of time)

  • Say hello.
  • Greet the whole class, and then greet a few students individually.

  • Chant while listening to the audio and looking at the cards.
  • Play the audio and chant with the kids while pointing at the alphabet cards on the board.

(Explanation in Hi, friends 1 Teachers handbook p. 23)
  • Pointing game 1: Listen to the letters the teacher says and point to the letter on p. 22, 23 of your textbook.
  • Pointing game 4: Get into pairs and use one book between you. This time, leave your fingers on the letters. The person who is pointing at the most letters is the winner.
  • Tell them you will be playing two versions of the pointing game.
  • Say letters and once they have pointed, show them the card and get them to check their answers.

  • Explain how to play by demonstrating with volunteers.

How to play chain game 1
  1. Make lines and make sure the last kid has a set of cards.
  2. The teacher says about 3 letters to the first person in each line (I N, O F F etc.)
  3. The second in line asks the first "What do you want?". The first person answers "~, please." with the letters they heard. The third person asks the second "What do you want?". The second answers with "~, please."
  4. Continue up the line. The last person will stick the cards on the board and check their answer.

  • Play the music and chant with the kids while showing the cards.

  • Everyone should have their own card set.
  • Get them to play in groups using the phrases "What do you want?" and "~, please."

  • Praise children about their attitude and use of English.

  • （ポインティングゲーム①）指導者が言うアルファベットを聞いて，各自が誌面p. 22,23 の周りにあるアルファベットの大文字をさし示す。
  • （ポインティングゲーム④）ペアになり，１つの誌面で行う。指導者が言うアルファベットを聞いて，アルファベットの大文字をさし示す。さし示した指はそのままに残し，多くの大文字をさし示していた方が勝ち。
  • ポインティングゲーム２種類をすることを告げる。
  • アルファベットを言う。児童がさし示したのを確認してから，教師用カードを見せ，アルファベットの大文字を確認させる。

  • 代表児童とデモンストレーションなどをして，進め方を示す。

【チェーンゲーム その１の進め方】
①列を作り，最後尾の児童は巻末児童用カード１組を用意する。
②指導者は，I, N やO, F, F など，３文字程度のアルファベットを列の先頭児童に言う。
③列２番目の児童は，先頭児童にWhat do you want? と尋ねる。先頭児童は，指導者から
  聞いたアルファベットを～, please. で答える。３番目児童は２番目児童に，What do you
  want? と尋ねる。２番目児童は，～, please. で聞いたアルファベットを答える。
④これを繰り返していく。最後尾の児童は，伝え聞いたアルファベットの大文字カードを黒板
  に貼り，答えを確かめる。
