Hiking/Climbing

Akita is home to a variety of hikes and climbs of all levels. From beginners to experts, there are all kind of trails you can challenge yourself on.

General advice

  • Plan Ahead and be prepared. Always tell a friend who isn't going with you where you are going and when you intend to return. Know the regulations and special concerns for the area where you are hiking.
  • Prepare for extreme weather, hazards and emergencies. Pack 2 liters of water. Bring a few candy bars. Insufficient food and water can lead to poor decision making processes, and that's the most likely way you will get injured in the back country. Carry a rain jacket. Even if it seems like a hot day, a storm can come up and protecting your core (stomach, chest, and arms) from the wind is important to avoiding hypothermia.
  • Dispose of waste properly. Pack out what you pack in. Carry a trash bag. Help keep the trails nice by picking up what others have left behind.

These principles are part of the Leave No Trace philosophy [1].
