Hyogo

From Akita Wiki

Hyogo (兵庫県;-ken) is a prefecture in the Kansai region of Japan.

Awaji Island (淡路島)

The gateway to Shikoku. Known for its sweet onions.

  • Wakado no Hiroba (若人の広場)
Located on a mountain top, this is a memorial/museum that was dedicated to Japanese students who died in World War two. It was built in the 60's, but was abandoned sometime in the late 80's maybe. A hotel was also built just down a small path, but the hotel is now also abandoned. It remains open to the public and is ridiculously creepy, even during the day. You can explore the inside of the memorial museum which includes, a restaurant, auditorium, offices, sleeping quarters, and more. This goes for the hotel as well. Be careful though, as there is broken glass pretty much everywhere, keep in mind it is an abandoned structure.

Onsen

  • Yu Yu 5 (ユーユーファイブ)
A nice onsen located in Wellness park 5 colors (ウェルネスパーク五色 高田屋嘉兵衛公園). The onsen costs 600yen and has a variety of baths (including an electric shock bath), and a sauna. The onsen is open from 10:30am-9:30pm.
Wellness park also has cabins and tent areas for camping, strawberry picking(seasonal), a restaurant, flower shop, playground, and lots of room for sports, etc.

Food

  • Southern Awaji Port food stalls - there are plenty of food stalls right at the port where you take the ferry. Most of the stalls have places where one can sit and enjoy delicious fresh seafood. The awabi and uni are highly recommended.
  • Southern Awaji Port center - inside the building where you get on the ferry to head to Shikoku one can buy local sakes and beers, as well as buy some local products, onions, dried fish, and onion soft cream. (warning, the onion soft cream is not for everyone, and sometimes the lady will give you half vanilla if she thinks you can't handle the whole thing, make sure to specify.)
  • G. Elm - a nice hand made gelato shop right across the way from the Southern port. Prices are reasonable and the gelatos are REALLY good.

Drink

  • Rokko Beer (六甲ビール)
    A Kobe craft beer. Homepage
