Slang For Higher-level Students

From David F.

Another good activity I have done with higher-level students is introducing them to slang. If you go online, and type in “English slang” and “日本語説明,” after a little poking and prodding, you should find at least a couple sites that have some basic slang alongside a Japanese explanation. While it can be a little confusing, i.e. “It’s raining dogs and cats,” some students will find it interesting as well and you may be surprised at how well they remember it. After doing my best to introduce the slang using simple English or pictures, I give them a worksheet to practice how to use it. I will say a sentence using the slang and have the students write it down word-for-word. Then I have them translate into Japanese. Finally I ask them to produce a sentence of their own.
