  • Write 8 or 10 nouns on the board in a circle. The nouns should be connected in sense to a common theme. For example, macaroni, apples, ice cream, salt, yogurt, water, fish and curry.
  • Ask students to suggest a point of comparison between any two. For example, "Ice cream is more fattening than yogurt." Draw a line between ice cream and yogurt to represent the comparison
  • Ask for another sentence linking two other items.
  • Repeat until a nice criss-cross pattern is formed.
  • Example word groups:
    • Boots, coat, dress, shirt, hat, watch, umbrella, jeans.
    • Lion, spider, snake, cat, mouse, fly, fish, man.
    • Reading, swimming, sleeping, watching TV, eating, driving, dancing, studying.
    • Hairdresser, bus driver, housewife, secretary, pilot, teacher, mechanic, doctor.
    • Field, wood, river, city, village, sea, lake, mountain.
    • Car, train, plane, spaceship, bicycle, ship, skis, submarine.
