Chokai Town (鳥海町) is a town in SE Yurihonjo City, Akita. The town covers a large area but has a low population. See the Yurihonjo travel guide for restaurants, shopping, and other such information.

History
- On 31st March, 1955 the Yuri district villages of Jinego, Kawauti and Hitane all merged into Chokai village.
- On 1st November, 1980 the village of Chokai gained town status.
- On 22nd March, 2005 Chokai town merged with Honjo city, and the towns of Higashi Yuri, Iwaki, Nishime, Ouchi, Yashima and Yuri to form Yurihonjo city.
Festivals
List of all Yurihonjo festivals
- Hinotodake Yamabiraki (丁岳山開き). On the 1st June the Hinotodake trail opens for hiking. Apparently people meet at Ohira Campground (鳥海大平キャンプ場) and hike Hinotodake and two neighboring peaks. The hike takes 2.5+ hours each way.
- Shinryoku Festival (新緑まつり). This festival takes place at the start of June.
- Chokai Kogen Family Adventure (鳥海高原ファミリーアドベンチャー). Takes place on the second Sunday in June.
- Chōkai mountain-climbing season starts (鳥海山百宅口山開き). The climbing trail from Oshimizu (鳥海大清水) opens on the 3rd Sunday of June.
- Chōkai Shishi Festival (鳥海獅子まつり). This festival is on the 16th of August.
- Mt. Chōkai half marathon (鳥海山ハーフマラソン). There is a half marathon at the start of October.
- Hottai Waterfall Autumn Colours Festival (法体の滝紅葉まつり). There is a festival here in the middle of October.
- Ski Area Opens (スキー場オープン). The ski area opens around the middle of December.
Schools
There are three elementary schools and one junior high school in Chokai Town. The elementary school graduates all go to the junior high school. Junior high school graduates generally go to high school in Yashima or Honjo. In 2013, the three elementary schools will be merged into Chokai Elementary School, which is to be built just north of the junior high school.

- Chokai Junior High School (鳥海中学校).
Chokai JHS was formed in 2000 as a merger of the three previous junior high schools -- Kawauchi JHS, Hitane JHS, and Jinego JHS. Decades ago, there were other junior high and elementary schools -- in Kogawa, Sarakawa, Momoyake, and perhaps elsewhere.
