Yashima Town (矢島町; -machi) is a town located in Yurihonjo City, Akita, Japan.

History

On 22^nd March, 2005 Yashima town merged with Honjo city, and the towns of Chokai, Higashi Yuri, Iwaki, Nishime, Ouchi and Yuri to form Yurihonjo city.

Sightseeing and activities

Yashima Ski Area (Japanese).
Chokai-san International Zendo (鳥海山国際禅堂). Experience the seated form of meditation called zazen.

Festivals

Sai no Kamiyaki (才の神焼き). This fire festival is on January 15^th.
Chōkai mountain-climbing season starts (鳥海山矢島口山開き). The climbing trail from Yashima opens on the 28^th of April.
Mt. Chokai Bicycle Classic (Mt．鳥海バイシクルクラシック). A large bike race takes place at the end of July.
Sakanoshita Bangaku (坂之下番楽). This traditional festival takes place on August 14^th.
Hasaku Festival (八朔まつり). Takes place on Saturday evening and all day Sunday, where the Sunday is the 2^nd Sunday of September. (第２日曜日前日宵宮)
Hanadate Autumn Festival (花立秋まつり). This festival takes place at Makiba park, Hanadate in Chokai Kōgen in the middle of October.
Ski Area Opens (スキー場オープン). The ski area opens around the middle of December.

Schools

There are three schools in Yashima.

Yashima Elementary School (矢島小学校).
Yashima Junior High School (矢島中学校).
Yashima High School (矢島高等学校).

In April 2009, Yashima Junior and Senior High Schools moved to a new building behind Lawson Station. Before 2009, the junior high school was on the hill by the softball stadium and the high school was near Town Hall and the elementary school. Now, the schools share the building but are otherwise separate entities.
