Yurihonjo City

Yurihonjō is a city located in Akita, Japan. It was founded on 22^nd March, 2005 when the former city of Honjo and the former towns of Chokai, Higashi Yuri, Iwaki, Nishime, Ouchi, Yashima and Yuri all merged together. In July 2008, the city had an official population of 86,854 and a population density of 71.76 persons per km². The total area is 1209.04 km².

Festivals & Events

List of all Yurihonjo festivals

Naked Festival (裸参り hadaka maeri)
This religious event takes place on the second Sunday in January each year. Groups of men and boys walk through the snow carrying various offerings to Shinzan Shrine in Honjo city.

Sightseeing & Activities

One Thousand Jizō, (千体地蔵, Sentai Jizō).

Honjo Park (本荘公園, Honjō kōen)
A large park in the center on Honjo. Each year there is a cherry blossom festival in April and an Azalea Festival in May.

Akata Giant Buddha (赤田大仏, Akata daibutsu)
A large indoor standing buddha in Akata.

One Thousand Jizō (千体地蔵, Sentai Jizō)
One thousand stone statues line the side of a hill in Oriwatari, Ouchi.

Kofuen Sumo Ring (光風園相撲場, koufuen sumou jou)
Located 5 minutes walk from Honjo Park, beside Tsurumai Baseball Park. This outdoor sumo ring was the first of its kind in Akita.

Onsen

Tsurumai Onsen (鶴舞温泉)
The most popular onsen in Honjo City. Enjoy the large indoor bath with jacuzzi, sauna and cool bath, stand under flowing onsen water or bathe outside. Located beside Honjo Park, it's a 10 minute walk from the train station. Open 8:00-21:30. Tel: 0184-23-7227.

Pine Spa Onsen (パインスパ新山, pain supa shinzan)
Opened in 2005. It's located near the beach in Ishiwaki. Open 9:00-21:00. Tel: 0184-28-1661.

Restaurants & Bars

Ramen

Seikichi Soba (清吉そば).
Located east of Lawson and west of B-Gal on Highway 107, directly opposite the ESSO Express. It is open 5am-3pm (closed Tuesday and Wednesday).
Oyaji Ramen (おやじラーメン).
Located near Max Valu and Yuri High School on Highway 105.
Chiyogiku (千代菊).
Located on the north side of Highway 107, just east of Route 7. Their recommendation is toromi ramen (とろみラーメン), but their tanmen is also an excellent choice. Tel: 0184-23-4419

Sushi

Umai Ichigan zushi (うまい一丸鮨).

This kaiten sushi is located opposite from the B-GAL pachinko building, in Honjo. Opening hours are 11:00 to 23:00. Tel: 0184-28-1310.
Eisuke sushi (栄助寿し)
There are two of these kaiten sushi chain restaurants in Honjo. One is located by K's Denki, and the other on Route 7.

Okonomiyaki

Warabeuta (わらべ唄).
This restaurant is on the NE corner of the traffic light just west of Honjo Station. Open 11:30-14:00, 17:00-22:00. Tel: 0184-24-4868.

Bars

The CASTAWAYS - Casual Bar (キャスタウェイズ).
A friendly karaoke bar. It holds 30 people, and is open 19:30-2:00 every night. It's located in Honjo opposite JC Shopping Center. No seating charge. Tel: 0184-23-4783.

Shot Bar BLESS.
A surf themed shot bar. It holds 30 people, and is open 19:00-2:00 every night. It's located in Honjo, 10 minutes walk from the train station. Seating charge ¥500. Tel: 0184-23-7311.

Socket - Party circle (ソケット - Party サクル).
A late bar situated directly above 'The CASTAWAYS'. Above the entrance to this bar 'Party' is spelled 'Praty'. This bar can hold about 50 people. Official opening hours are from 20:00-5:00, but it'll close earlier if there is not many there. This atmosphere in this bar often only gets going after 12am. Tel: 0184-22-0088.

Bar Razzle Dazzle (ラズルダズル).
A karaoke bar with a large screen. Seats about 35 people. Located in Honjo, 5 minutes from 'Shot Bar BLESS'. Seating charge ¥500, and songs cost ¥100 unless you choose the nomihoudai. Tel: 0184-22-3826.

Non-burnable garbage - Blue bag. Once a month, including holidays.

Bulky refuse. Collected twice a year on specific dates.

Workplace Network

When accessing the Internet at schools or Boards of Education in Yurihonjo we have certain restriction enforced on us.
