Directions

Print 2 copies of the file. Glue the pages onto red construction paper, cut them out, and laminate them. Make as many sets as groups you would need in class. I usually need to make 8 sets for classes of 30-40 students.

Game Instructions

  1. Make groups of 3-4 students.
  2. Students will shuffle the cards and deal out 5 cards to each player.
  3. Students look for matching pairs in their hands. Pairs are taken out and put on the desk in front of them. Make sure students don't mix their cards into one discard pile - they should be saved and kept as their points.
  4. Students janken. The winning student chooses one card from their hand and asks the question on the card to one person in the group. For example, "Did you go to Niagara Falls?" If the student they asked does not have the same card, they will respond with "No, I didn't." The student who asked the question must pick up a card from the draw pile and the play passes to the left. If the student they ask has the same card, they will respond with "Yes, I did" and give the card to the student who asked. The student gets to take another turn until the answer is "No, I didn't. If the student draws the same card that they had just asked about, they can go again. If they pick up a card and it matches a different pair in thier hand, they don't get to go again. Play continues until all of the cards in the students' hands and draw pile are used up.
  5. The student with the most pairs is the winner.

Alternative Versions

  • Make your own cards based on your own country! Simply change the images, colours, and text to suit your needs.
  • Change the grammar point to suit the level of your students! For example, instead of "Did you~?" you can use "Have you ever~?" or "Will you~?" Anything with a "yes" or "no" answer will work.
