Section 1: Questions

Part A – Warm up questions

Directions:
This is the warm up so please remember to ask your student(s) questions that they are comfortable with. After asking your student “What is your name?” and “How are you today?” please read out the introductory sentence then choose 5 questions from the following list. Speak clearly and naturally.

Step 1. Please ask:

What is your name?
How are you today?

Step 2. Introductory sentence:

“OK. Let’s start. Section 1. Part A. I will ask you five easy questions, OK?”

Step 3. Questions. Choose any 5:

1. When if your birthday? 7. Who is your favorite movie star?
2. Do you study everyday? 8. Can you swim?
3. What is your hobby? 9. How tall are you?
4. What animal do you like? 10. What music do you like?
5. Ho many sisters do you have? 11. What time are you going home today?
6. Do you like English? 12. Who is your best friend?


Part B – Picture Questions

Directions:
Remove the “Students Copy” of the picture provided and give it to your student. First, you must ask (do not show) the three provided questions. Next, the student is required to ask you three questions about the picture.

Step 1. Introductory sentence:

“Section 1. Part B. Please look at this picture. (give student the picture). I will ask you three questions about it. OK?”

Step 2. Questions:

1. How many people are cooking? 2. What is he doing? (point to the man playing the guitar) 3. Who is wearing a hat?


Step 3. Student’s own questions. Introductory sentence:

“Great! Now, please ask me three question about this picture.”

Section 2: Text Comprehension

Directions:
The student has three minutes to read the given text. They must then read the text aloud and answer the five questions provided. Please do not help your students with the meaning of the words in the text. You may ask each question TWICE only.

Step 1. Remove the page titled “Section 2: Text Comprehension. Student’s Copy” and give it to the student.

Step 2. Introductory sentence:

“Section 2. Please read this text silently for three minutes. OK?”

Step 4. Student must read aloud.

“Now, please read the text aloud.”

Step 5. (After student has read the text) Questions.

“Now, I will ask you five questions. Ready?”

  1. Where do Momonga live?
  2. Do Momonga have big eyes?
  3. Where does the biggest Momonga come from?
  4. Can Momonga eat bird eggs?
  5. When do Momonga sleep together?

Step 6. Repeat the questions if necessary.


Section 2: Text Comprehension: Student’s Copy


“Momonga” (Flying Squirrels)

“Momonga” live in many different countries. They are usually brown or grey and have large eyes and soft hair. In Africa, they have small tails. The biggest Momonga comes from Japan.

Momonga can eat nuts, flowers, bird eggs, and fruit. In winter, they sleep together in big groups. Sometimes there are 30 Momonga is one tree!

Section 3: Twenty Questions

Directions:
After you have chosen one of the three categories listed (PERSON/PLACE/THING), the student must try and guess who/what/where you are by using Yes/No questions. You can answer “Maybe” or “Sometimes,” but do not give any hints. If you do not know the answer to one of the student’s questions, please say “I don’t know.” (The question itself will not be counted as one of the 20.)

Please use a paper and pen to keep track of the number of question asked, and keep track of time for a maximum of 5 minutes. If the student gets the answer before they have used up all 20 questions and there is still time available, they should continue the questioning process.

Step 1. Please choose from one of the options below:

Step 2. Introductory sentence:

“Section 3. We have five minutes. This section is twenty questions. I am a … (your choice of category.)… Please ask me Yes/No questions to find out (who/what/where) I am. Are you ready? Great, let’s start…”

(Note: Remember if your student gets the answer before using all twenty questions encourage them to keep on asking.)

Section 4: Listening Comprehension

Directions:
After reading out the four questions clearly and naturally to your student, please read the text twice with a small pause between each reading. They then have to answer the questions.
(Note: the students may make notes if they want to so make sure you give them this option.)

Step 1. Introductory sentence

“Section 4. Listening. You can use this paper and pen to make notes if you want to. There are four questions. First I will read the questions then I will read the text two times. After that I will read the questions again and I want you to answer them. Do you understand? No? Well, just try, OK?”

Step 2. The Questions.

“OK, let’s start. Here are the questions………”

  1. “Question 1. When does Jeff go to Sapporo?
  2. “Question 2. What color are Jeff’s boots?
  3. “Question 3. Who likes talking?
  4. “Question 4. What is Amy’s dream?

Step 3. The Text

“Now I will read the text…”

Jeff’s hobby is dancing. He goes to Sapporo every Friday to dance with Amy. She also loves to dance. Sometime Jeff wears his blue and white boots when they are dancing. He enjoys it.

After they dance they are very tied. Jeff wants to relax and drink strawberry milk but Amy likes talking. Her dream is to be a famous dancer and maybe make a dancing video.

Step 4. Repeat the text.

“Now I will read the text again. OK?...”

Step 5. Question and answer:

“Now, please answer the questions…”

Question…(Student’s answer), Question…(Student’s answer)…, etc.

Section 5: Comic Strip Description

Directions:
After looking at the comic strip for three minutes the student must tell you anything they can about it. They have four minutes to describe the story, pictures, characters, etc. (Note: The students may make notes if they want to so make sure you give them this option.)

Step 1. Remove the page titled “Section 5: Comic Strip Description: Student’s Copy” and give it to your student.

Step 2: Introductory sentence:
“Section 5. Last section. Please look at this comic strip for three minutes and use this pen and paper to make notes. After three minutes you have to tell me about it. Ready?”

Step 3. Student reads for no more than three minutes.

Step 4. “Now, please tell me about this comic strip. You have four minutes. Go…”
