Kathy has a friend who lives in Tokyo. Her name is Mary. She often writes to Kathy. Here is one of her letters.

July 12, 1981
Dear Kathy,
I am now staying in a small village at the foot of Mt. Fuji. It is much cooler here than in Tokyo. Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan, and its top is above the clouds. I have not climbed it yet, but I would like to climb to the top some day. They say the rising sun seen from the top is very beautiful.

I came here to live with a Japanese family for a few weeks. In the family there is a girl who is just my age. Her name is Keiko. I go to a Japanese school with her.
My Japanese father is a farmer. He works on the farm from morning till night. The youngest member of the family is a baby who is ten months old. I sometimes carry him on my back!
I am staying in a room which has six tatami or straw mats. At night I sleep on futon or a kind of mattress which is spread on the tatami floor.

Keiko and I leave for school at half past seven. On Monday morning, before classes start, all the teachers and students meet in front of the school building. We bow and say good morning. Then the principal talks for a short time. We also listen to the announcements that are made by some teachers and students.
On other days we have a homeroom period that is ten minutes long. We usually have a lot of things to talk about.
We eat lunch in our classroom. Every day after school we clean our room ourselves.

We usually leave school at four. Many students walk home. Some go home by bus. The bus stop is not far from the school.
There is a river which runs through the village. On holidays many people go fishing there. Yesterday I ate some fish caught in the river. They were very good.
One of the boys in my class wants to have an American pen pal. His name is Yoshio. I told him about you. I am sending you his address and picture. I hope you will write to him.

Your friend,
Mary
