Do you know anything about this person? Have you ever seen Roman Holiday or My Fair Lady? She was the star of these movies! Her name was Audrey Hepburn. She was famous as an actress, but she has left us something more than these movies.
Hepburn had a difficult time when she was a child. Although her father was rich, he left the family when she was young. Her mother took Audrey to the Netherlands when she was ten. She thought it was a safe place, but the German army took over the Netherlands when Audrey was eleven. Her dream of becoming a ballerina had to wait.
During the war, Hepburn's life was very difficult. After the German army came, their life changed. There was never enough food. There wasn't even enough firewood for the fireplace. Many people died of hunger and the cold, especially young children and old people. Hepburn also suffered from hunger. She became very weak. When there was no food, she even ate tulip bulbs.
Hepburn's talent started to bloom after the war. She moved to London with her mother, and she practiced ballet and began to study acting. After a while, she was discovered by an American director and was cast as a princess in Roman Holiday. The movie was a big hit and she received the Academy Award for Best Actress. She was in many movies after that, including My Fair Lady. She became one of Hollywood's most popular actresses.
Hepburn thought spending time with her family was very important. After she married, she lived in Switzerland. She always felt safe there. She didn't have to worry about war. She spent as much time as she could with her two sons. She wanted to be with them when they needed her.
Because of her war experience as a child, Hepburn wanted to protect children in countries at war. She felt that working for children was her mission. After her sons grew up, she started to work with UNICEF in 1988. She visited children suffering from war and hunger in many countries. Because she received food and medicine from UNICEF after World War II, she knew what UNICEF meant to children.
Hepburn was always giving. "Giving is like living," she said in an interview. She also said that if you stop wanting to give, there is no more meaning in life. She always wanted to give hope to children.
Audrey Hepburn died of cancer in 1993, four months 5 after her visit to Somalia. She made a deep impression on people. This is not just because of her movies, but also because of her devotion to children all over the world.
