When Clancy was born, his parents were not happy. Clancy's parents were Belted Galloways, black cows with a white belt. But Clancy had no belt! He was just black. As he grew up, the other cows didn't want to play with him. He had no friends.
Clancy wanted to have friends. So he wanted a white belt. He rolled in the snow. He tied a white bandage around himself. He even painted a white belt on himself. But nothing helped. He couldn't get a white belt. Clancy was not a happy cow.
In the next field, there was a group of white cows with brown patches, the Herefords. They were big because their field was full of rich grass. Every year, the Belted Galloways and the Herefords had a wrestling contest. The winner's group had the right to eat in the field of rich grass. Because the Herefords ate the rich grass, they were always bigger, so they always won the contest.
Some nights, the Belted Galloways tried to enter the field of rich grass. But the Harefords could see their white belts and always chased them away. One night, Clancy went into the field of rich grass. But he had no belt, so the Herefords couldn't see him! Every night after that, Clancy ate as much rich grass as he wanted. He got bigger and bigger.
One night, when Clancy was eating the rich grass, he met another cow. She was one of the Herefords, but like Clancy, she was different. She was all brown. And like Clancy, she was lonely.
"Hello," she said. "Who are you?"
"I'm Clancy," he answered. "I'm sorry I'm in your field."
"No problem!" she said. "My name is Helga. Will you be my friend?"
"Yes, of course," Clancy replied.
So they became friends, and every night they ate together in the field.
Then it was time for the wrestling contest. Clancy was the biggest of all the Belted Galloways. So Clancy entered the contest and he beat his rival in record time. A big surprise! A Belted Galloway won the contest!
The Belted Galloways began to chase the Herefords out of the field. "Stop!" said Clancy.
"This is terrible. We should all eat together!" "That's right," said Helga. Then, for the first time, the Belted Galloways and the Herefords began to eat together in the same field. Soon, they realized that there was plenty of grass for everybody. They all grew big and healthy, and at last they were able to enjoy living in peace.
