Common Reductions
This is a lesson on common reductions.
First, give students the common reductions handout and review the words.
Next, hand out the colloquial English sheet and have students translate the word reductions into their regular forms.
Next, divide the class into groups of 2, 3 or 4 and hand out the dialogs. There are dialogs for groups of 2, 3, and 4 students. Note: Many of the provided dialogs are not very funny so it may be a good idea to create your own as well. If you have any interesting or funny dialogs please post them here.
Next, have the students change the formal written English in their dialogs into colloquial English with the help of their reductions handout.
Lastly, have students present their dialog.
Note: The other groups must listen for the word reductions and then raise their hand after the presentation to name them. The group that can find the most reductions is the winner. You may want to spend some time helping students understand their dialogs and correcting their intonation etc... So, this can take a whole class or even two classes.
