News Websites Idea From David F.
Sometimes I also go to news websites like [www.Mainichi.com Mainichi] or [www.Yomiuri.com Yomiuri] and visit the English version of the site. If I find an interesting article, I’ll print out both English and Japanese versions of the article and use a whiteout pen to mark out edit the content. Sometimes (if I can get the info digitally) I also use a word processor. I mix and match the English and the Japanese and then ask a variety of questions about the info. Again, I have found this to be a good opportunity for students to use their dictionaries and learn new vocabulary. Most of the time, I try to limit the activity to about 20 minutes or so. If longer, I have found students losing interest in the task.

Q: How is the Secret Service protecting Barack Obama, who will be the first black president of the United States?
A: Obama was placed under the guard of the Service in May 2007 -- even before he was named as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate. The Secret Service took this unprecedented step out of fear that white supremacists or other racist groups might attempt to assassinate him. The Secret Service will likely step up its guard of Obama after he is sworn in.
