A long, long time ago, the Greeks had interesting stories about gods, goddesses, and nymphs. Here is a story about a nymph who lived in the woods. Her name was Echo. She was very beautiful, but she had one fault. When she started talking, she never stopped. She talked and talked for hours, and all her friends became tired.
Hera, the goddess of the heavens, got angry with Echo and said to her, "You talk too much. From now on, you can only repeat the last two or three words you hear." Echo was very sad and did not come out of the woods.
One day Echo saw a handsome young man. His name was Narcissus. She fell in love with him at once. She wanted to talk to him, but she could not. She followed him sadly in the woods.
Narcissus was in love with himself and did not show any interest in others. But when he noticed the beautiful girl among the trees, he said, "Who's there?" "Who's there?" repeated Echo. "Come here!" called Narcissus. "Come here!" Echo repeated and ran toward him. She was very happy.
"Hello," said Narcissus.
"Hello," repeated Echo.
"Who are you?"
"Who are you?"
"Do you live near here?"
"Live near here?"
"Stop that!"
"Stop that!"
This went on for a few minutes. Finally Narcissus got angry and walked off. He would not speak to her any more. Echo was very sad. She threw herself down and broke into tears. Then she ran out of the woods, walked up a hill, and disappeared.
Even today people can hear Echo in the mountains.

遠い昔，ギリシャ人は神や女神や妖精についての興味深い物語を持っていました。ここに森に住んでいた妖精の話があります。その妖精の名前はエコーといいました。エコーはたいへん美しかったのですが，1つだけ欠点がありました。彼女は一度話し出すと，話をやめるということがありませんでした。何時間も話し続けるので，友逹はみんなうんざりしてしまいました。
天上の女神であるヘラはエコーに腹を立て，次のように言いました。「おまえはおしゃべりが過ぎる。これからはおまえに聞こえる最後の2，3のことばをくり返して言うことしかできなくなるからね。」エコーはたいへん悲しんで，森の中から出てきませんでした。
ある日エコーは1人のハンサムな若者と出会いました。彼の名前はナルキッソスといいました。エコーはすぐにその若者に恋をしてしまいました。彼女は若者に話しかけたいと思いましたが，それができませんでした。彼女は森の中を悲しげに若者のあとをついて行きました。
ナルキッソスは自分自身に恋をし，他人には全く関心を示しませんでした。しかし木々の間にその美しい少女を見たとき，ナルキッソスは声をかけました。「そこにいるのはだれ。」「そこにいるのはだれ。」とエコーはくり返しました。「ここに来なさい。」とナルキッソスは呼びました。「ここに来なさい。」とエコーはくり返してナルキッソスのほうへ駆けて行きました。彼女はとても幸せでした。
「こんにちは。」とナルキッソスは言いました。
「こんにちは。」とエコーはくり返しました。
「あなたはだれ。」
「あなたはだれ。」
「あなたはこの近くに住んでいるの？」
「この近くに住んでいるの？」
「真似をするのはやめろ。」
「真似をするのはやめろ。」
これが数分続きました。とうとうナルキッソスは怒って歩いて行ってしまいました。彼は二度と彼女に話しかけようとはしませんでした。エコーはたいへん悲しく思いました。彼女は身を投げ出してわっと泣き出しました。それから森を走り出て，丘をのぼり，姿を消してしまいました。
今日でも，人々は山でエコーの声を聞くことができます。
