Gon was a naughty little fox and loved to play tricks. One day he saw a man, Hyoju, by the river. Hyoju's basket was full of eels. Gon crept up and let the eels out of the basket. "Stop!" Hyoju shouted, but Gon and the eels escaped.
Ten days later, Gon went to the village. There were many people in white kimonos at Hyoju’s house. Hyoju looked sad. Gon thought, "Hyoju's mother died. The eels were for her. Now, Hyoju is alone, like me."
The next day, Gon took some fish from a vendor's cart and left them at Hyoju's house. Another time, Gon brought some chestnuts and heard something. Hyoju said to himself, "The fish vendor is angry with me. But I didn't take the fish!"
After that, Gon only brought chestnuts and mushrooms for Hyoju. Hyoju said to his neighbor, "Every day, I receive food from someone — gifts of chestnuts and mushrooms. Who brings these things?" The neighbor said, "Maybe it's a god." Gon heard and thought, "It's not a god, it's me."
The next day, Gon crept through the door into Hyoju's house. Hyoju looked up. "That's Gon, the naughty fox! He took my eels!" Hyoju picked up his gun. Bang!
Gon fell to the ground. Then Hyoju saw the fresh chestnuts on the floor. "Oh, Gon, was it you? You helped me?" Gon nodded weakly. Hyoju dropped his gun. Blue smoke rose from the gun.
