This is a story Mr. Jones wrote for an American newspaper.
What comes to your mind when you hear the name Hiroshima? An atomic bomb? Yes. It's the first city in the world that was destroyed by an atomic bomb.
Why did it have to happen? Have you thought about it? So many thousands of people were killed.

Here are the memories of a boy whose family lived in Hiroshima when the bomb was dropped.
"August 6, 1945 - On that hot summer day the atomic bomb made me an orphan. I was in the fifth grade then, and lived in a village with other children, away from my family.
"That morning I saw a very bright flash, and felt a strong explosion without knowing anything about the disaster. Big, dark clouds rose over the village.

"An uncle who lived in a town near Hiroshima went to the ruins of my house. Finding the remains of my family seemed almost impossible. At last he found those of my brother in the water tank. My father's body was found in the ruins of his office. My mother and sisters were never found at all.
"Ever since then I have often dreamed of the faces of my father, mother, brother, and sisters. Those dear faces have disappeared from the world forever!

"When I heard of the deaths of my family and my friends' families, I couldn't help hating war. I often stood on the bank of the river which flowed through the city. I wanted to flow away, too, and forget all about war and death. But it was impossible.
"Now Hiroshima has declared that it will be a city of lasting peace. I hope the world will have lasting peace, too. No more Hiroshimas!"
