Do you know how many languages are spoken in the world? 100? 1,000? No, many more than that. There are about 6,000 different languages in the world. But sadly, almost half of those languages are in danger of disappearing.
A language disappears when no one speaks it anymore. Even in Japan, some languages are in danger. You may know that Japanese is not the only language spoken in Japan. Some native people also speak unique languages such as Ainu. But the native speakers are growing old, and younger people don t have many chances to learn their languages. Someday, these native languages may disappear completely.
New Zealand had a similar situation. The native Maori people had a strong language and culture long before English settlers came. But as more and more people from England arrived, English became the common language. By the 1980s, only a few Maori people spoke their own language well. Some Maori leaders started a movement to recover their language. They taught classes and made people proud of their Maori culture. Now, both Maori and English are official languages in New Zealand.
Is it OK to have just a few common languages that everyone uses? Fewer languages may make global communication easier. Or, should we save every language and support different cultures? What do you think?
Let me tell you my opinion. I think everyone should take pride in their own language and learn it well. I think everyone should also study a second language, to communicate with different people and learn about their cultures. Then, we can all understand each other better.
Languages are treasures. They are not only tools of communication, but also a part of our culture and history. We all want to take care of the environment for the next generation. I think we should do the same for our native languages.

危機にある言語
世界ではどれくらいの言語が話されているか知っていますか。100 ？ 1000 ？ 実を言うと，それよりももっと多いのです。世界にはおよそ6000もの異なる言語があります。しかし悲しいことに，それらのうちほぼ半数が消滅の危機にあります。
言語はそれをもはやだれも話さなくなったときに消滅します。日本でさえ，いくつかの言語が危機にひんしています。知っているかもしれませんが，日本で話されている言語は日本語だけではありません。アイヌ語のような，独自の言語も話す先住民がいます。しかしその母語話者たちは年をとり，若い人たちはその言語を学ぶ機会があまりありません。いつの日か，これらその地独自の言語は消滅してしまうかもしれません。
ニュージーランドも同じ状況でした。イングランドからの移民が来るずっと前から，先住のマオリ族は強く根づいた言語や文化を持っていました。しかしイングランドから人が次々に移住してきたため，英語が共通語になりました。1980年代までには，ほんのわずかなマオリ族しか自分たち本来の言語を上手に話せなくなってしまいました。そこでマオリ族の中から彼らの言語を取り戻す運動をはじめる指導者が出てきました。彼らは学校で指導をし，人々が自分たちのマオリ文化に誇りを持つようにしました。現在では，マオリ語と英語のどちらもニュージーランドの公用語になっています。
だれもが使える共通語がほんのわずかあればよいのでしょうか。言語がより少なければ地球全体のコミュニケーションはより容易になるかもしれません。実際に，英語は最も便利な国際語になりました。あるいは，わたしたちはすべての言語を守り，それらの保存に努める人々を支援すべきなのでしょうか。
言語は，それを世代間で使ってきた人たちにとって宝です。それらは単なる意思の伝達手段というだけではなく，彼らの生活や歴史の一部でもあるのです。言いかえれば，言語とは文化そのものです。
もしわたしたちがわたしたち自身の文化をよく理解すれば，わたしたちはほかの文化も等しく大切なものであることがわかるでしょう。だから，もしわたしたちが１つの言語しか理解できないのなら，わたしたちには言語の本当の大切さがわからないことになります。
わたしたちは次の世代のために環境を大切にしなければなりません。わたしたちは言語に対しても同じことをしなければならないのです。
