Forty-five of the greatest singers in American popular music were recording the song "We Are the World."
Quincy Jones was conducting. Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, and other famous stars were singing with the same wish to help the starving people in Africa.
At the entrance to the studio there was a sign, "Please check your ego at the door!" In the studio there was a sense of fellowship which filled everyone with energy. "It's a kind of energy that really can change the world," said Stevie Wonder.
They started to record the song at 10:00 p.m. that night. They worked together for ten hours, until 8:00 a.m. the next morning.

A few days before Christmas in 1984, Harry Belafonte, a famous American singer, was watching TV. He saw a film about an Australian doctor who was working in Ethiopia. He was caring for starving children.
Harry Belafonte thought that he also should take action. He wanted to make a record to raise money to save those children. He asked Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie to write the words and music.
The pop stars sang their hearts out. They did not receive any money for their work on this record. All the money was sent to Africa to save people from starving.
Lionel said, "I don't want you to forget the hunger problem until babies stop dying from hunger. Do anything you can, if you have any feeling in your heart about human life."

The recording of "We Are the World" was quite an event. But in many ways all that happened that night was just a start.
About two months later, on April 5, more than 8,000 radio stations around the world played "We Are the World" at the same time. All the world shared the same feeling: We are all members of the earth family.
