Mark Twain was an American writer. He wrote a lot of interesting stories. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of them. He was a humorous man.
One holiday Mark Twain went to Maine to fish in a lake. He caught some big fish and took a train to go home. There were not many people on the train.
At the next station a man came in and sat in front of Twain. He was dressed in an ordinary way, but he did not look friendly. For some time they did not speak to each other.
Finally the man said, "Are you enjoying your holiday?" "Yes," answered Twain, "I went fishing. I caught a lot of fish." "Did you?" said the man.
Twain proudly talked about his fishing for some time, and asked, "Are you enjoying your holiday, too?" "No, I'm not," the man answered. "I'm a policeman, and I'm looking for people."
"Looking for people? What people?"
"Some people go hunting or fishing in this season. I'm looking for such people. You must not hunt or fish now, you know. It is against the law."
Twain was surprised, but he said calmly, "But you don't know me."
"No," said the policeman, "Who are you?"
I am the biggest liar in this country," said Mark Twain.

マーク・トウェイン魚釣りに行く
マーク・トウェインはアメリカの作家でした。興味深い話をたくさん書きました。『トム・ソーヤの冒険』はその１つです。ユーモアのある人でした。
ある休日に，マーク・トウェインは湖で釣りをするためにメーン州に行きました。大きな魚を何びきか釣って，帰宅するために列車に乗りました。列車はそんなに込んでいませんでした。
次の駅で１人の男が乗ってきて，トウェインの前にすわりました。普通の服装をしていましたが，親しみにくい感じでした。しばらくは，おたがいに口をききませんでした。
とうとう男が言いました。「休暇をお楽しみかな？」「そうですな。」とトウェインは答えました。「釣りをしてきまして。魚をたくさん釣りましたよ。」「そうかね。」と男は言いました。
トウェインはしばらく釣りの話を自慢げにしたのでした。そしてたずねました。「あなたも休日をお楽しみで？」「いや，いや。」と男は答えました。「わたしは警察の者でね。人をさがしているんですよ。」
「人をさがしている？ どんな人をですか？」
「この季節に猟や釣りに行く人間がおるんで。そういう人をさがしているんですよ。今は猟や釣りをしてはいけないのはご存知でしょうが。法律違反ですよ。」
トウェインはびっくりしました，でも落ち着いて言いました。「だがわたしのことをご存知ないでしょう。」
「うん，知りませんな。」と警官は言いました。「だれですか？」
「わたしはですね，この国いちばんの大うそつきなんですよ。」とマーク・トウェインは言いました。
