"Daddy is home!" Grace ran outside to meet her father. "Did you bring me a present from the fair?" she cried. "Sure, Grace," said her father. They came into their house.
Her father opened a box and gave her a candied apple. She liked it very much.
After dinner her father showed his family a picture of a man who looked sad. He said, "This is a man who is running for President." Grace was very interested in that picture.

It was about bedtime. Grace was gazing at the picture which stood at her bedside. She got up and began to write a letter:

Dear Mr. Lincoln,
My father showed me your picture. I like it very much. I am only eleven years old. But I hope that you will be our next President. Do you have any little girls? I have four brothers. I will ask them to vote for you. But first, can you grow some whiskers because they will make you a handsome man?
Good-by,
Grace Bedell

Grace mailed the letter the next morning. A week later she went to the post office. There she found a letter that was addressed to her. It was from Mr. Lincoln!
The letter said:

My dear little Miss,
Thank you for your letter. I am sorry, but I have no daughters. I have three sons. You asked me to grow some whiskers. But don't you think people will laugh if I grow them?
Your friend,
A. Lincoln

Lincoln won the election in 1860. On his way to Washington, D.C the next year, there were lots of people who wished to see him.
When his train stopped at her town, Grace was surprised. Mr. Lincoln had whiskers!
As soon as he finished his speech, he asked "Where is Miss Bedell?" Grace was lifted up by a tall man and was carried to the train. Lincoln bent down and took her hand, and said, "I have grown my whiskers for you."
