In an old village in old Japan there was a young man. His name was Otoko-san. One day he found a piece of bamboo on the street.
A goblin with a long nose was flying in the sky. Otoko-san saw him, and said, "I want his straw coat. When I have it on, no one can see me."
Otoko-san looked up at the sky through the bamboo, and said, "Beautiful! Wonderful!"
The goblin came down, and said to Otoko-san, "Will you lend me your bamboo?" "Oh, no," answered Otoko-san. "I don't want to lend it to anyone."
At last the goblin said, "If you lend it to me, I'll lend you my straw coat."
Otoko-san agreed. But, as soon as he received the coat, he began to run away. The goblin shouted, "Stop!" But Otoko-san ran home quickly.
At home Otoko-san put on the straw coat, and he could not be seen. Then he went out again. On the street he saw a man with a new pair of socks in his hand. Suddenly the socks flew out of the man's hand and danced along the street.
A girl was looking at the flying socks. She had an umbrella in her hand. It also flew up. The socks and the umbrella danced around, and suddenly flew into a pond near the street. The man and the girl were very surprised and could not speak.
Otoko-san went home, took off the coat and lay down. Soon he was sleeping with the coat beside him.
Then Otoko-san's mother came in and saw the straw coat. "What an old coat!" She carried it to the fire, and threw it in. It soon became ashes.
When Otoko-san woke up, he asked his mother, "Where's my coat?" He got angry, but he took off his clothes and put the ashes on himslef. Soon he could not be seen!
He was very happy and wanted to drink sake. He went into a sake shop. Many people were drinking there. He took up one of their cups and drank from it. One of the people shouted, "Look! A cup is flying up and down." They heard some noise, but they could not see anyone.
Then people saw something like a mouth. "What's that?" they shouted and looked at one another. With a cry the strange mouth flew out of the door. Everyone ran after it, and shouted, "Stop! Wait!"
Otoko-san ran very fast, and came to a big river. There was no bridge across it. So he jumped into the river. The water washed all the ashes away. He could be seen again, and he was sitting in the water without any clothes on. Everyone laughed and laughed.

オトコさんと蓑
昔の日本の古い村に，ある若者がいました。その名はオトコさん。ある日，オトコさんは通りに１本の竹が落ちているのを見つけました。
天狗が空を飛んでいました。オトコさんは天狗を見て，こう言いました。「あの蓑がほしいなぁ。あれを着れば，だれにも姿を見られないで済む。」
オトコさんは竹を通して空を見上げて言いました。「美しい！ すばらしい！」
天狗はおりてきて，オトコさんに言いました。「あなたのその竹を貸してくれませんか。」するとオトコさんは答えました。「いや，ダメだ。これはだれにも貸せないね。」
ついに天狗は言いました。「もしそれを貸してくれたら，わたしの蓑を貸してあげますよ。」
オトコさんは承諾しました。ところが，蓑を受け取るなり，オトコさんは逃げていったのです。天狗は「待て！」と叫びましたが，オトコさんは大急ぎで家へ走ってかえりました。
家でオトコさんが蓑を着てみると，まるで姿が見えなくなりました。そのまま再び外へ出ました。通りに，新しい足袋を手に持っている男がいるのが見えました。突然，足袋は男の手から抜けて，通りをおどるように去っていきました。
空飛ぶ足袋を見ている娘がいました。娘は手にかさを持っていました。それも宙に舞い上がりました。足袋とかさがあっちへこっちへとおどり，突然，通りの脇の池に飛びこみました。男と娘はあまりに驚いて，何も言えませんでした。
オトコさんは家にかえり，蓑を脱いで横になりました。そしてまもなく，蓑のかたわらで眠りにつきました。
すると，オトコさんのお母さんが部屋に入ってきて，蓑を見つけました。「なんて古い蓑なのでしょう。」と言って，蓑をいろりへ運んで投げこみました。蓑はまもなく灰になってしまいました。
オトコさんは目を覚ますと，お母さんに聞きました。「おいらの蓑はどこだ？」オトコさんはかんかんになりながら，服を脱いで，蓑の灰を体にぬりました。すると姿が見えなくなったのです！
オトコさんはうれしくて，酒が飲みたくなりました。そして酒場へ行きました。たくさんの人が，そこで飲んでいました。オトコさんは，ある人のさかずきを取り上げて飲みました。お客の1人が叫びました。「おい，さかずきが上へ下へと飛んでるぞ。」音は聞こえても，だれも見えませんでした。
ところが，やがて何か口のようなものが見えてきました。「何じゃ，あれは？」と，人々は叫びながら顔を見合わせました。叫び声を上げて，その奇妙な口は外へ飛び出していきました。みんなは「止まれ！ 待て！」と叫びながら，それを追いかけていきました。
オトコさんは必死に走っていくと，大きな川へやってきました。橋がかかっていないので，川の中に飛びこみました。灰は全部，川の水に流されてしまい，オトコさんは丸見えです。すっぱだかで水の中にすわっているオトコさんの姿に，みんなは笑いが止まりませんでした。
