About one hundred years ago, many doctors were studying small living things. Some of them were interested in food. Pasteur was among them. They were trying to find the cause of bad food.
Pasteur used the best microscope that he could get. He found bacteria in bad food. He also found that heat could kill them.
Thousands of silkworms died in those days. Pasteur worked hard to find the cause. Pasteur knew that other doctors were also working very hard.
All the silkworms that Pasteur studied ate their first meal early in the morning. So Pasteur always had to get up early in the morning. He also did not go to bed until midnight. At last he found out how to save the silkworms.
One day, in the street a dog which had a bad illness bit a boy on the leg.
His mother was very much surprised when she heard the news. She feared that he would become very ill.
His mother did not give up hope. She hurried to Pasteur's house. She knew about the work which he was doing. She asked him, "Please save my son. Please try your new medicine."
The boy whom the mother brought was crying. Pasteur spoke to him, "Don't be afraid." He carefully tried his new medicine on the boy with fear and hope.
Pasteur tried his new medicine every day. At last the new medicine which Pasteur tried saved the boy's life. The mother thanked the great doctor with all her heart.
