Spring in America

This is not a legal recitation, because it is from New Horizons English Course 3 Teacher's Manual, 2006.
America is a large country, so spring is different in many parts of the country. In the north a lot of snow falls in winter, and spring comes late. Even in March the wind is still cold there, but in the south people enjoy swimming.
At this time of the year there is a lot of snow on the high mountains in the west. In the east beautiful flowers begin to open in the fields.
Perhaps you know the cherry trees in Washington, D.C. They were given to America by the city of Tokyo. Early in April they begin to bloom all at once. They are very beautiful against the blue sky and water.
When the blossoms are at their best, a festival is held. The most beautiful girl is chosen as the Cherry Blossom Queen. Many people come to see the Queen and the cherry blossoms.
In New England May is the best time of the year. People go out for a walk to enjoy the beauty of nature. The fields are full of flowers, and birds sing all around.
The second Sunday of May is Mother's Day. Children often give their mothers small presents to thank them.
A little girl in New York once wrote a short poem about her mother.
Mother is just like spring.
She is warm and pretty.
How happily birds sing.
When spring is back in my city!
And how glad I am with Mother!

アメリカの春
アメリカは国土が広いので，国の中でも各地で春の様子がちがうものです。北部では冬に大量の雪が降り，春の訪れは遅いです。そこでは３月に入っても風が冷たいですが，同じころに南部では泳ぎを楽しむことができます。
１年のこの時期，西部の高山には雪が多く残っています。東部では，美しい花々が野に咲きはじめるころです。
ワシントンD.C.のサクラの木を知っているでしょうか。それらは東京がアメリカに贈ったものです。４月のはじめに，それらはいっせいに開花します。そのサクラは青い空と海を背景にして，実に美しいです。
花が満開になるころ，祭りが開催され，いちばん美しい娘が“サクラの女王”に選ばれます。多くの人々が，サクラの女王とサクラの花を見にやってきます。
ニューイングランド地方では，１年中で５月がいちばんよい時期です。人々は散歩に出かけて自然の美しさを堪能します。野には花が咲き乱れ，方々で鳥のさえずりが聞かれます。
５月の第２日曜日は母の日です。子どもたちはしばしば感謝の気持ちをこめて，母親にちょっとした贈り物をします。
ニューヨークの少女があるとき，母親についてこんな短い詩を書きました。
母さんはまるで春のようだ
あたたかくて きれい
街に春が戻ってくると鳥たちは喜んで歌う
そしてわたしは母さんといっしょでうれしい
