Three soldiers walked into a village. They were on their way home from the wars. They were tired and very hungry, but the villagers were afraid of strangers.
The villagers said, "Soldiers are always hungry. We have little enough for ourselves." They hid all their food.

The soldiers stopped at one house after another and asked for food, but the villagers' answer was always the same. They all said, "We don't have any food."
The three soldiers talked together. Then a soldier called out, "Good people! You have no food. Well then, we'll just make stone soup." The villagers all looked at the soldier. "Stone soup?"

"First we'll need a large pot," the soldiers said. The villagers brought a very large pot. The soldiers filled it up with water and heated it up. Then they found three large stones and put them into the pot. They also put in salt and pepper and said, "Stones like these make good soup, but with carrots and cabbage, it will taste great." Villagers brought them some carrots and cabbages.
"Beef and potatoes will make a wonderful dinner out of this soup." The villagers brought their potatoes and beef right away.

"And," said the soldiers, "a little milk will be nice. The king asked for soup like that at a dinner with us."
The villagers looked at each other. The soldiers knew the king himself! Of course they brought their milk. At last the soup was ready.
"Everyone, let's eat," the soldiers said. Then the villagers said, "Wait! We need some bread and some drinks."

Soon everyone sat down to dinner. They ate and drank and ate and drank. They danced and sang until midnight.
Then the three soldiers asked, "Are there and beds for us tonight?" "Sure there are!" said the villagers.
So the soldiers slept in three nice houses that night. In the morning all the villagers came out and said goodbye. "Many thanks," they said. "We will never go hungry. We can always make stone soup."
"Right!" said the soldiers. "Goodbye!"
