Friday, July 20. Fair.
The first term is over. About this time last year, I was in America. My last summer vacation was just wonderful.
This vacation won't be so good. I have to study hard. So I call it "the summer term," not "the summer vacation." Before my "summer term" starts, I'm going to have some fun. I'm going to the sea to swim with Yumi, Judy, and Sam. I may be able to fish, too!
Saturday, July 21. Fair but hot.
I went swimming with Judy, Sam, and Ken. Some people were surfing on the rolling waves. There was a tall boy among them. His friends called him Kazu. While we were having lunch, he came up to us. He wanted to talk to Judy in English. Soon he ran out of words. But somehow we talked on. Later we all had sandwiches and iced tea together.
Kazu asked Judy's telephone number. Will he call her? I think they liked each other.
Saturday, Aug. 11. A little cooler.
Today Yumi's father had a holiday. He drove Yumi, Judy, Ken, and me to her uncle's house in the country. In the evening, we went to the bon dance. It is given to welcome the spirits of the dead. People wearing yukata were dancing to the music. I joined them. Everyone smiled at my strange dancing, but I had a good time.
Judy didn't talk much. What was she thinking about?
Sunday, Aug. 12. Rain.
When I arrived in Japan, I was surprised at the streets filled with people. There's another surprising thing. Everything is so small - rooms, houses, cars - everything! But department stores are very big!
We went to one of them today. I found a pretty blue dress and wanted to buy it. But when I looked at the price, I was surprised again. You can buy two for the same price in Phoenix.
Kazu still hasn't called. I had better try to forget him.
