The Little Prince

New Crown English Series 2 (2021) pg. 122-125

The Little Prince lived alone on a very small planet. He wanted to know more about space, so he went on a trip to other planets.

On the first planet lived a businessman.
He was adding numbers. He was so busy that he did not notice the Little Prince.
"Three plus five makes eight. Twelve plus four make sixteen. In total, that makes one million."
"One million what?" asked the Little Prince.
"Stars," said the businessman. "Look! Those stars over there are all mine."
"What do you do with so many stars?"
The businessman said, "Nothing. I simply own them because I want to be rich."
"Why do you want be rich?" asked the Little Prince.
"So I can buy more stars, if someone discovered them."
"And what will you do with more stars?"
"I'll count them and then count them again."
"Is that all?"
"That's enough!"

On the second planet lived a geographer.
He said, "Geographers describe the seas, rivers, mountains, and deserts of planets."
"How interesting!" the Little Prince said. "Does your planet have any seas?"
"I don't know," said the geographer.
"Oh. What about rivers?"
"I don't know," said the geographer.
"Or mountains or deserts?"
"I don't know that, either," the geographer said.
"But you're a geographer!"
"Exactly," he said. "I'm a geographer, not an explorer. Explorers explore seas, rivers, mountains, and deserts. They come to my office. I ask them questions and write down their answers. I never go out. Sadly, there are no explorers on my planet, so I can't answer your questions."
"I see. That's sad," the Little Prince said as he left.

The third planet belonged to a king.
"Quick! Come here!" the king ordered the Little prince.
"Good afternoon," said the Little Prince.
"Stop! You mustn't say anything without my permission."
The Little Prince yawned. He was tired.
"Stop that! You can't yawn without my permission, either. Now yawn again. It's an order!
The Little Prince had nothing to say, so he went away.

The Little Prince visited several strange planets. He has not visited the earth yet. What questions will he ask us?

New Crown English Series 2 pg. 88-93

A little prince lived alone on a very small star. It was as large as a house. He wanted to know more about space. So he went on a journey to other stars.
On the first star lived a businessman. He was counting figures.
"Three and five make eight. Twelve and four make sixteen. That makes just one million."
"One million what?" asked the little prince.

"My stars in space, you know," answered the businessman. "Look! The stars over there are all mine."
"What do you do with so many stars?" asked the prince.
"Nothing. I own them."
"Why do you own the stars?"
Why? I want to become rich."
"Why do you want be rich?"
"I can buy more stars, if any are discovered."
"And what will you do with more stars?"
"Nothing. I will own them."

On the next, star a lamplighter was putting on a street lamp.
"Why did you put on the lamp? You don't need a street lamp on this tiny star," said the little prince.
"I don't know. That is the order," answered the man, and then he put off the lamp.
"Why did you put it off?"
"That is the order."
"I do not understand," said the prince.
"There is nothing to understand," answered the man. "Orders are orders."

On the third star lived a drunkard.
"What are you doing there?" asked the prince.
"I am drinking," said the man.
"Why are you drinking?"
"I want to forget."
"Forget what?"
"Forget my shame."
"What are you ashamed of? " asked the prince, because he wanted to help the man.
"I am ashamed of my drinking habit," said the man and he drank again.

The fourth star belonged to a king.
"Come here. I order you," said the king when he saw the prince.
"Good afternoon," said the little prince.
"Oh, no! Don't say anything without an order."
The prince yawned. He was a little tired.
"Don't do anything without an order, I told you!
Now I order you. Come on! Yawn again."
The little prince found nothing to say. He went away.
