Word Pyramid

Preparation

materials: Media:word pyramid handouts (click here to download handout) objective: improve students listening and speaking skills, espcially with regards to common problem syllables and words.

Description

1. Present the words that will be used to the class using word cards, and explain the written and spoken differences between similar words. Have the students listen, watch, and repeat.
2. Have the ALT choose and read each word slowly to the class one time each, and let the students select which word they think the ALT has said. After all the words have been said check the answers with the class.
3. On the second reading, have the ALT cover his/her mouth and say the words with a more fluent speed. This time the students can ask to hear each word 2 times.

Notes

This activity can be done as a warm up for 2nd and 3rd year students, but may require a longer time with 1st year students. The following method was used for 1st year students. Words should be chosen which are appropriate for each grade level.
