The Akitan
The Akitan is an online publication maintained by the Akita JET Public Relations Committee (PRC). Compared to the monthly newsletter which the PRC also manages, the Akitan is a long-form quarterly journal featuring photography and writing from the past season, all of which are volunteer submissions by the ALT community. See how you can make the best of Akita and Japan in every season by catching up on event information, articles, photography, reviews, travel logs, and creative writing all made by the Akita JET community!
History
The journal was started as a renewal of an old newsletter the Education Center ALT used to send out from 1996-2005 called News from the Center. The newsletter, in pdf form, was restarted under the name News from the PAs after concerns about people not receiving information and announcements about various work-related events. The Akitan has brought this old newsletter to an all new level by transforming it into a digital web-journal. Averaging from 80 to 100 pages and with 200 to 300 readers monthly, it focuses on Culture, Food, Art, Travel, and Lifestyle. In 2019, the PRC took over production of the Akitan from the PAs. It is currently emailed to all JET members and is entirely composed of volunteer submissions.
Not only is the Akitan meant to be an avenue for the JET community to express themselves creatively and receive and share information, but it also serves as an archive with snapshots of Akita life as far back as 2010 for former ALTs to come back to.
