Description
This is a game for review questions (in the spirit of the Mario Kart ESL game). It emphasizes team work, sentence creation, and spelling. Each team must escape the titan that is chasing them by answering certain questions. The students are in small groups with a white board and a marker. They answer the teacher's questions on their white boards. When they have a correct right answer, they can move their character one step forward. Every 2 rounds, the titan is moving one step forward.
If one character gets caught by the Titan, their character becomes a chibi titan (small titan) and try to catch the other characters. (At this point, if you feel that it is appropriate to keep the loosing team engaged, you can tell them that every good answer by a team with a chibi titan can move 2 steps instead of one)
If one character has passed the end line, give this team the opportunity to give their step forward to another team. This way you keep them engaged in the game and they can help their friends reach the end. Alternatively, Levi can be used as a bonus character. When a team has reached the end, they can become Levi and help a team move forward or push the titan back.
Note: Levi is the most popular character, and Erin after that. It is easier to assign characters to groups than let them choose.
This game can be adapted to any review activity. (The teacher writes the questions)
How to play
- Divide your students into groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Give each team a small whiteboard and a marker. (Use paper if you don't have any).
- Explain how the game works to the students.
- Ask each team to choose a character.
- Ask the first question (give the students a set time to answer the question).
- Ask the student to show you their answers. If they get it right, move their character one step forward.
- Every 2 turns, move the Titan one step.
- The first team to get to the end wins.
Set up the board
Your board should look like this at the beginning of the game. The titan is on the left and chasing the characters. The characters are on the starting line and must reach the end. ( You can tell the students that the end is the wall). Depending on how many questions you have, you can add as many steps as necessary.
