Directions

  1. Choose one of the battleship pages, or make your own. I edited mine in MS Paint before I got Office, so you can edit them either way.
  2. Photocopy enough sheets for every student.
  3. Put double-sided tape on the back of the pieces at the bottom of the page (mushroom, koopa, etc.).
  4. Give students scissors to cut out the pieces.
  5. Students stick the pieces anywhere on the board, including the brick and pipe.
  6. Students make pairs, choose a random spot on the board, and ask a question by putting together the row and column that meet at that spot.
  7. If the student has a character on that spot, they will answer "yes." If not, they will answer "no."
  8. The students will use the small blank table at the bottom of the page to track the spots that they asked. They will use a circle for spots where their partner says "yes," and an X where their partner says "no."
  9. The winner is the person who finds all their partner's characters first, or who has found the most by the end of class.

Note: There are demo pieces that are larger that you can use to demonstrate how to play the game. I copy them, laminate them, and add magnets to all of the spots at the back of the table and the backs of the playing pieces to make them stick anywhere. Trust me, this is easier than drawing it out each class to demonstrate! Demonstrations are definitely needed to play this game if you have never done it before with your students as they can get confused.
