This is a halloween lesson suitable for 5th-6th grade elementary students. It can also be used in junior high school.
Preparation
- Print pictures for new words.
- Print and laminate these cards for the card exchange game.
- Print word search sheets. There are 2 sizes available A3 or A4, if you have groups of 4 the A3 size is recommended.
- Print worksheets for each student.
Instructions
- Introduce new words and target sentence:
witch, spider, jack-o'-lantern, haunted house, black cat, bat, ghost, vampire, skeleton, mummy, trick or treat.
What are you?
I'm a ____. - Card exchange game.
Each student is given one card and keeps it secret. Make pairs and both kids use target sentence. If the cards are different, the students exchange cards, say goodbye, then make a new pair. If the cards are the same, the students are finished and can sit down.
NOTE: Trick or treat card is not used for this game. - Word search
Students are in groups of 4. Each group gets 1 word search sheet and each student gets 1 worksheet. As a group the students search for hidden words.- When students locate a word they circle it and 1 student goes to the JTE. The JTE confirms it's ok, and crosses out the word at the bottom of the sheet.
- Next the student comes to the ALT (who has one full set of exchange card game upside down) and chooses a card. The student looks at it (e.g; spider), puts it back and returns to his group.
- All members of the group now trace over the letters "a spider" on their worksheet. Then they search for another hidden word, and continue.
- The winner group has the most amount of words on their worksheet traced over when time runs out.
NOTE: In this game, the trick or treat cards represent a free card: the students can trace the letters for whichever picture they like on their worksheet.
Notes
- In the Word search file there are many hidden words. Choose which words you want to teach and erase the others before printing.
- If you laminate the word search sheet you can reuse it. Just give the students erasable markers to mark the words they find.
- Play some scary halloween music during the lesson to add to the atmosphere.
- Lesson inspired by Amelie Girard.
