Every Friday night Mike's mother gives him some money. He sometimes has a date with Helen at the drugstore. He pays for their food.
He usually has enough money for a week. But this week he has very little money. He bought some new records last Saturday. They were very expensive.
When he wanted to buy them, his mother said to him, "You may buy them if you have enough money. I won't give you any more till Friday night."
"That's all right with me," said Mike. "I'm very fond of music, you know."

On Wednesday Mike met his friend Bob on the way to school.
"Are you going to go to the dance on Saturday?" asked Bob.
"Of course."
"With whom?"
"With Helen."
"Oh, you're lucky, aren't you? She's a nice girl. Many boys want to have a date with her. Have you bought the tickets for the dance?"
"No, not yet."
"You'd better hurry, then. Perhaps the tickets will be sold out tomorrow."
Mike was shocked. "What shall I do?" he said to himself. "I don't have enough money now."

At lunch time Mike talked with his best friend Paul.
"Both Helen and I are fond of dancing, you know, but we've never gone to a dance before. I'm going to take her to the dance on Saturday."
"Have you bought the tickets?" asked Paul.
"No," said Mike. "I've spent almost all my money this week. I can't buy the tickets for our first dance! What shall I do?"
"Well, have you asked your mother?"
"No. I know she won't give me any more money till Friday night. She'll get angry if I ask her."

After dinner Mike asked his father for some money.
"Well," said his father, "you should be more careful. I can't lend you any money."
Then the telephone began to ring. Mike answered it.
"Hello, Mike. This is Helen. I know you want to take me to the dance, and I also know you're in trouble."
"Who told you that?"
"Paul did. And I'm glad you think so much of me. I'll buy the tickets for you and myself if you don't mind. I was a baby-sitter at my uncle's last Saturday."
"Thank you very much, Helen," said Mike.
"You're welcome," said Helen. "I'm looking forward to the dance."
