What should the title be?

  • National Association for the Study of Education in Remote and Isolated Areas or
  • National Federation of Remote Education Research

Maybe Research (or even Development) instead of Study? Also, I recommend Federation as the translation for 連盟. --SeanC (talk) 10:28, 12 May 2026 (JST)

The official Japanese name is 全国へき地教育研究連盟 (Zenkoku Hekichi Kyōiku Kenkyū Renmei), commonly abbreviated as Zenhekiren (全へき連). No single standardized English translation of the name appears to exist, but two versions that I could find are listed below:

  • National Association for the Study of Education in Remote and Isolated Areas
Used by the National Institute for Educational Policy Research (NIER; 国立教育政策研究所), a Japanese national research institute affiliated with MEXT.

Oh good, we have a competing standard :/
Hokkaido University of Education seems to be more closely linked to Zenhekiren, so my instinct is to prioritize their translation: National Federation of Remote Education Research (they have their whole RISE department — Research Institute for Remote and Small School Education / へき地・小規模校教育研究センター — devoted to it after all).
Which also makes the 大会 easier to translate into English:
National Convention for Remote Education Research
(If we followed the NIER standard, it would become the "National Convention for the Study of Education in Remote and Isolated Areas" ... which actually doesn't look that bad when I type it out. However, HUE seems to be the forerunners in this topic, so go against their translations at your own peril.) --SeanC (talk) 10:10, 14 May 2026 (JST)

OK, National Federation of Remote Education Research seems like the way to go. Thanks for your insights. --owencunn (talk) 10:44, 14 May 2026 (JST)

You might also consider just adding a short sentence somewhere near the top of the page saying "This organization has also been called/referred to as/tranlated as the National Association for the Study of Education in Remote and Isolated Areas in English by NIER" or something, just to cover all bases.
Also, do you know if へき地 includes 離島 (remote islands) as well? It doesn't really matter to us in Akita since we don't have any, but if it does, then maybe that's worthwhile to add to the list of things/meanings that へき地 encompases --SeanC (talk) 15:14, 14 May 2026 (JST)
