Have the students form pairs and decide which player is X and with is O. Give each pair a Tic-Tac-Toe game sheet (included File:Past Tense tic tac toe.doc). Taking turns, each student reads aloud one of the verbs from the grid. The student must then use the past tense of the verb in a simple sentence. For example, take: Yesterday, I took the bus to school. If the sentence is correct, the student puts an X or O in the square containing the verb. The student who gets three X’s or O’s in a row is the winner. **My JTE implemented 2 rules: 1) 10 seconds per turn, and 2) sentences must be at least 4 words long. It seemed to work well.**
