This was a HUGE hit with my students. Here is how it works:

First, download my video presentation. You can also make your own with power point quite easily.

  • NOTE The file is a QuickTime video of my mac keynote slideshow. If you do not play the movie in Quicktime after downloading it, the original soundtrack may not come through. In this case, you may want to play your own music during the countdown scene. The video preview in google docs fails to play the video sound properly.

Rules

  1. Students get into groups of four or so with one student being the captain (writer).
  2. Tell students that they will be looking at a survey that was actually given to 1000 people around the world. People who did the survey were asked to say the first thing that came to mind. For example, "Fruit!" and they would say apple or orange.
  3. In groups, students will see the categories and write down what they think the most popular five answers were with one being the most popular and 5 being the 5th most popular.
  4. Students will have 60 seconds to write down their answers. Once done, show the students the answers. They will receive points based on their guesses. For example, 10 points if they guessed what the first most popular answer was and so on. If they guessed something that was on the list but put it at a different ranking, they can get one point for it being on the list.

Leave five minutes at the end of class to tally the points to find out which group is the winner.

Notes

Use the first category, "Days of the week" as a practice round to make sure they all understand how it works.
