Karuta style

Target audience: 1st-2nd grade junior high school.

Preparation

  1. Write an essay about your life using known grammar forms and/or target grammar forms.
  2. If you use unfamiliar vocabulary, provide Japanese translations (ask your JTE for help).
  3. Choose 5-10 nouns and make karuta cards.

Description

  1. Pass out Key Word karuta cards.
  2. The ALT reads an essay about his/her life.
  3. As the ALT says the key words, students slap the karuta cards.
  4. The first student to slap the karuta card gets to keep the card.
  5. At the end of the essay, the student with the most karuta cards, wins.

Fill in the Blank Style

Target audience: 2nd-3rd grade junior high school.

Preparation

  1. Write an essay about your life using known grammar forms and/or target grammar forms.
  2. If you use unfamiliar vocabulary, provide Japanese translations (ask your JTE for help).
  3. Choose 5-10 words and change them into blanks.

Description

  1. The ALT reads his/her essay 2-3 times.
  2. The students listen and try to fill in the blanks by catching the sound.
  3. After the ALT has finished reading, the JTE reads the essay one more time, pausing before each blank.
  4. The class says the correct answer in unison.
  5. The ALT writes the correct spelling on the board.
