Guest Lecture: Thriving as an ALT in Japan

Jhana Graham (Guest lecturer)

This online session allowed ALTs to (1) reflect on their journeys as language educators, (2) identified goals for the coming school year, and (3) created a map that considers socio-emotional, mental and intellectual well-being.

The facilitator, Mrs. Jhana Graham, shared from a wealth of experience that she has accumulated over the past decade as an educator in Japan. Her journey as an educator began in Niigata as a JET participant. She then worked for 5 years as a Direct Hire ALT in Nagano Prefecture, where she worked for 2 years at the Prefectural Education Centre. She currently works as Foreign Language Teacher in Gunma Prefecture.

Over the years, she has been the Keynote Speaker at Skill Development Conferences in Niigata and Nagano Prefectures. She has also done various presentations across Japan and Asia. This includes a TEDx Talk in Hong Kong. She's presently a PhD Student at Sophia University.

Her work, personality and drive are inspiring. This session will leave participants feeling refreshed and refocused as they prepare to 'Thrive as ALTs in Akita Prefecture' for the coming year and beyond.

Despite this, goals are an important part of self-fulfillment and so this presentation is designed to put into perspective the pitfalls of goal setting and how we can avoid falling victim to them whilst making the most of your time on JET.

Discussion: Habits & Goals for Your Time on JET

Suriya Ratnam

In this discussion, we'll be asking individuals to share their ambitions while in Japan, both past and present and behavioral changes they've found helped them progress towards those goals.
