Trick-or-treating is a halloween lesson/activity suitable for 4th-6th grade elementary students.

Preparation

  • Buy or prepare candy. Candy from overseas is always a popular choice.
  • Ask any available teachers to help hand out candy to the students. This could include teachers in the teachers room, the school nurse in the nurses' room, and/or the principal in the principal's office. Tell the teachers that each student must ask for candy by saying "Trick-or-treat!" in English.
  • Have the students create masks. See Halloween Masks for directions.

Instructions

  1. Explain to the students that trick-or-treating is popular practice in many countries.
  2. Explain what the phrase "Trick-or-treat" means; in Japanese it means 「お菓子をくれないとイタズラしちゃうぞ~!」. Have them memorize the English phrase.
  3. Have the students then split up and go to the various rooms in the school that are being manned by teachers and ask for candy by saying "Trick-or-treat!" in English. Once they say this phrase they are allowed to receive some candy.
  4. Since the students probably won't be allowed to eat the candy during school, tell them that they can eat it at home.

Notes

  • It's best to review Halloween-specific English words to give them an idea of the types of masks they can make. Once again, see Halloween Masks for directions.
