Trick-or-treating is a halloween lesson/activity suitable for 4th-6th grade elementary students.
Preparation
- Buy or prepare candy. Candy from overseas is always a popular choice.
- Ask any available teachers to help hand out candy to the students. This could include teachers in the teachers room, the school nurse in the nurses' room, and/or the principal in the principal's office. Tell the teachers that each student must ask for candy by saying "Trick-or-treat!" in English.
- Have the students create masks. See Halloween Masks for directions.
Instructions
- Explain to the students that trick-or-treating is popular practice in many countries.
- Explain what the phrase "Trick-or-treat" means; in Japanese it means 「お菓子をくれないとイタズラしちゃうぞ~!」. Have them memorize the English phrase.
- Have the students then split up and go to the various rooms in the school that are being manned by teachers and ask for candy by saying "Trick-or-treat!" in English. Once they say this phrase they are allowed to receive some candy.
- Since the students probably won't be allowed to eat the candy during school, tell them that they can eat it at home.
Notes
- It's best to review Halloween-specific English words to give them an idea of the types of masks they can make. Once again, see Halloween Masks for directions.
