Halloween Masks is a halloween lesson suitable for 1st-4th grade elementary students.

Preparation

  1. Print pictures for new words.
  2. Print masks and copy onto card. You may need to resize the masks depending on the size of your kids faces!
  3. Cut out eyes prior to lesson.
  4. Prepare head bands to attach to masks.

Instructions

  1. Introduce new words. Witch, spider, jack-o'-lantern, black cat, bat, ghost, vampire, skeleton, mummy, trick or treat.
  2. Cut out and color mask. Students cut out and color their masks as they choose. ALT supervises and makes suggestions if required.
  3. Attach head band. When the students have finished coloring, they go the the JTE who helps them attaching head bands to their mask.
  4. Play Halloween basket. Now the students put on their mask and play Halloween basket. "Trick or treat" is the call for all students to change seat. Encourage the kids to take the role of their mask. i.e. Mummies walk like mummies, ghosts make ghost noises, etc.

Variations

  • Instead of printing out masks, have the students create an original Halloween mask on their own. Have them draw a colorful mask on a paper plate anyway they see fit, then have them cut out holes for any eyes or mouth, and finally attach disposable chopsticks to one side of the plate to create a handle. This variation requires some shopping for supplies but it's always proved popular with this ALT's 5th and 6th graders.

Notes

  • Halloween basket is the same game as Fruits Basket.
  • Play some scary halloween music during the lesson to add to the atmosphere.
  • Lesson inspired by Amelie Girard.
