Tax Guides
Regardless of where you come from, we all must pay our share in taxes. This page provides information on how to do your annual taxes outside your home country. Please be aware that this page is more of a secondary and tertiary site of information regarding taxes and that the best place to look for the most accurate and up to date information is your country's tax services website.
USA
Unlike other countries that participate in the JET program, the US taxes all of its citizens worldwide, regardless of what country they claim residency in. Therefore if you are a US citizen, even if you live and work in Japan, you have to file your US taxes. Note that even if you don't owe anything in taxes to the US, the IRS still requires you to file your US taxes every year to prove it.
US Tax - First Years
If you are a first-year American JET, generally speaking you have to file Form 8822 to change your address; Form 4868 to request an extension of time to file; and Forms 1040, 1040 Schedule 1, 1040 Schedule B, and 2555 to eventually file your taxes. You may also have to file additional forms based on your tax situation before JET. See the Current Tax Year guide below for details and respective deadlines.
