The 2nd annual Akita International Sumo Basho (第二回秋田県国際相撲場所) took place on Saturday, July 1st 2006 at Yabase Sports Park in Akita City. This year 32 men took part in the competition, including the reigning Yokozuna Corey Campbell.
Brackets
All names drawn from a hat. The only two people who were seeded were Corey (who as Yokozuna fought last) and Seth Dorman who made it to the semis last year. They were separated them by placing them at opposite ends of Round One. Everyone else's name went into the hat.

秋田県Everest of Apples(エベレスト・オブ・アップルズ)
秋田県エベレスト・オブ・アップルズでは昨年から、力士のほとん どがALT(※参照)の先生という、大変ユニークな「外国人相撲大 会」を開催しています。2回目となる今年は、秋田市八橋で観客も含 めて約120名の参加を得て、7月1日(土)に開催されました。足の長 いまわし姿の力士が立ち並ぶ姿はユーモラスで、道行く人々も思わず 立ち止まるほどでした。参加費1,000円は、ネパールの貧困に苦しむ 子どもたちの教育への支援などに充てることになっています。これま でハロウィンダンスパーティなどを開催し、その収益金で、昨年10 月、ネパールに小学校を建てることができましたが、ローン返済のた めなどにまだまだ資金は必要です。今後も活動を続けて資金を集める 予定です。
エベレスト・オブ・アップルズの活動は青森県のALTの先生たち から始まり、最初はそれに秋田のALTの先生たちが賛同する形でし たが、後に独立しました。そのような経緯で団体名に『りんご』が入 っているのです。これからは外国人相撲大会になるべくたくさんの秋 田の方々と子どもたちが参加できるようにしたいと、代表のローレ ン・メッシングさんは話してくれました。
