The 2017 Skills Development Conference (外国語指導助手の指導力等向上研修) was held on October 24th at the Prefectural Education Center in Tenno. It was planned to be held from October 23rd to 24th, but the first day was cancelled due to travel concerns involving Typhoon Lan, the 21st typhoon of the year in Japan.

Day One: 09:30-09:50
Day Two: 09:00-09:30

  • Dress: Formal Business Attire

What to Bring

For those lucky enough to be staying in the dorms at the Center, there is a bed and a shower provided for you but almost nothing else. You will need to bring:

  • A towel (plus small towel for the onsen) and toiletries;
  • Indoor athletic shoes if you plan on using the gym;
  • Cash. There is no ATM at the Center. The vending machines for meal tickets accept notes of ¥1000, and change no smaller than ¥10.

Meals

The cafeteria at the Education Center will serve a different set menu each day.

Elementary School Activities Brianna Hom & Kathryn Ross
Starting next year, many schools will enact new elementary school English subject policies. Teachers and ALTs will have an increased role in his new curriculum and will be expected to support homeroom teachers, especially since most elementary teachers have never taught English before. In addition to introducing and playing some example activities, two veteran ALTs will look specifically at elementary English instruction, including lesson planning, tailoring games and activities to classes, team teaching, and how to try to avoid a dry, rote lesson to take advantage of the energy and enthusiasm of elementary school students.

A working relationship is a two way street that relies on effective communication between both the JTE and ALT. In order to have an effective working relationship both in and outside the classroom we must be able to communicate and understand each other so that we can be more effective in teaching English. Throughout this presentation we will be examining how to improve our communication through a range of activities that will allow both sides to understand more about each other, our expectations of the job and English.

The Charity Akita dinner party was also cancelled as a result of the first day of SDC being cancelled. The planned dinner was taco rice.
