Here be whirlpools, and some other stuff

  • Naruto
Just across the Naruto bridge from Awaji Island you can head to Naruto park and pay 500yen to walk in a small tube that runs underneath the bridge. In this tube there are glass panels that you can look through to see the famous whirlpools. You can also book a boat ride in an attempt to see them as well.
Be careful though, you can only see whirlpools at certain times during the day. So make sure to call in advance and find out the Whirlpool forecast for the day.
  • Oboke gorge, Iya Valley, Vine Bridges
This is one of Japan's most beautiful scenic areas. Due to its lack of extensive roads, access is sometimes difficult, and therefore the scenic beauty and authenticity is more preserved than in other regions.
Oboke/Koboke Gorge(大歩危/小歩危) - Great scenic spot that offers rafting.
Iya Valley(祖谷渓谷) - One of the 3 hidden spots of Japan. Home of the famous "Pissing Boy" Statue, Biwa Falls, and delicious Iya Soba.
Vine Bridges(蔓(かずら)橋)- The Iya valley is home to 2 vine bridges. Exactly the type that were used in this remote area hundreds of years ago.
It's worth noting that there is also a Japanese Ghost museum at the michi-no-eki right in the middle of the Iya Valley.
