Toyama

From Akita Wiki

Toyama (富山県;-ken) is a prefecture in the Chubu region of Japan.

Toyama City (富山市)

Toyama is the biggest, and capital, city in the prefecture. Due to a recent influx of Russian immigrants, some animosity has built up with the Toyama natives. It's not uncommon to see signs on bar doors that say "NO RUSSIAN MAN." Just outside of town one can find numerous Russian used car dealerships. There is plenty of shopping up the main street in the center of town. Regardless of what the Toyama ALTs say, I'm sure its a decent place. There is a nice area around the reconstructed castle. With a small park and lots of statues.

  • Le Cafe Du Le Petit Prince(ラ・カフェ・ド・プティ・プランス)
    富山県富山市桜町1丁目7-24
    076-413-7726
This place looked really interesting, although we didn't stop here. The food looks really good, if a bit pricey.

I'm sure Toyama city has some hidden gems, so don't write it off.

Toyama black is a type of noodle famous in this area.

  • Shomyodaki waterfall
There is a mountain road that goes to a park close to Haku-san that will take you there. From the parking lot its about a 30 minute hike to the waterfall itself. Be careful, there is a speed trap as you come out of Toyama city towards haku-san. WATCH THE LIMIT SIGNS LIKE A HAWK

Namerikawa(滑川)

Home to the firefly squid. This small and delicious cephalopod that inhabits these waters swarm back to mate during spring. Their bioluminesence lights up the bay a cobalt blue. One can buy tickets to ride the tour boat and watch the fisherman bring them out of the water at 2:00 in the morning.(tickets go onsale in march for the actual event, which happens during golden week, in May) Or you can go to the close-by firefly squid museum. In which you can learn about them and even pick them up.
